review 1: An intelligent chick lit novel that I found hard to put down. For me the best scenes involved the office which did seem remarkably casual in many respects. I could identify with Rebecca's feelings in trying to deal with Lorna who was so skilled in passive-aggressive tactics - and I could understand Rebecca's keenness to see what she could achieve in Lorna's absence. Less hard to understand is why she felt the need in such an informal office to cover up the true reason for the absence. Well drawn rounded characters. Rebecca's husband was rather shadowy, but nevertheless came across as a gem. The ending was perhaps a bit sugary sweet and the front cover illustration was not a true representation of the story. A good read that makes me want to read more books by Jane F... moreallon.
review 2: Pure delight, cheeky fun, British chick lit at its best. I could NOT put this one down. Isabelle and Alex, Rebecca & Alex, best friends for 20 years until Alex decides he doesn't want to be married anymore, because he is in love with Rebecca, not his wife Isabelle. Alex & Dan have been best buddies forever ("mates," as the Brits say. Meanwhile, Rebecca loves Dan, hates her office mate, is furious with Alex, and worries about Isabelle. You grow to love all the characters, except for the selfish fool, Alex! There is a great cast of secondary characters, bits & bobs about the children and office mates. This book is a gift to give yourself when you want to laugh and get lost in a quirky modern tale, set in the present day suburbs of London. less
