review 1: Starts out as a fun fantasy about contemporary American kids being sent to relatives in Ireland to escape some sort of dangerous flu epidemic (whatever). The setting is charming, until it veers into traditional fantasy territory. I'm not a big fan of adult fantasy, so the Seelie/Dark Court stuff, the fairy glamour, the village rituals and the cruel twists for a few of the characters left me cold. It almost feels like the first 1/4 of the book was tacked on to accommodate non-traditional fantasy readers.

This time, I liked the ash trees, and the idea that people don't do "now" well because the past and future are constantly pressuring them. Trees are very now - rooted to the place they are planted, experiencing the weather as it is. less

The kids loved this one. I think it was a bit over the heads of my 8-10 year olds.

Fantasy is not really my favorite genre, but I loved the vocabulary in this book.
