review 1: A fun read with the surprisingly rare premise of the haunted theatre; I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing, fast paced thriller. It was clever enough to keep me guessing while remaining an easy, light read. I can't say much for the characterisations, Rayne introduces certain main characters as boring, then constantly has them behave "out of character" and while other characters go to great lengths to tell us what a dish Toby Chance is, (words like charming, mischievous, raffish get thrown around liberally) he is actually a bit dull once you get to know him. The setting of the old theatre is wonderfully evocative and interesting, especially if like me you've spent your fair share of time in one. The supernatural element starts strongly but ebbs out and the resolutions are e... morequal parts silly and smart. 3.5 stars.
review 2: This is clearly not one of Sarah Rayne's best work. I am normally a big fan of her books and have rated most of them 5/5 stars but this one was a bit of a disappointment. First of all, I didn't particularly like any character apart from the Richard, and I only mildly liked him. Hilary seemed like a over enthusiastic tween. I did not like her at all. The whole Tarleton mystery turned out to be such a total squib in the end that it was almost ridiculous! Shona's story was the best and most disturbing bit of the book and I enjoyed it greatly! Though it had nothing to do with the actually plot-line!! less
