review 1: I love this sequel but do not wish for another honestly. Young Jack has traipsed far enough with Miss Volker at this point. The friendship between them is really sweet. The plot is quite embellished so although book 1 is more plausible, the embellishments make this one funnier. Gantos' writing style is reminiscent of Garrison Keillor for a younger set. As a grown up reader, I really liked it. As a teacher, I enjoyed it but finding the right student for this historical fiction ride might be a challenge. I actually think more high school aged kids could find some joy in it even though our protagonist is young, like 12-14 or so.
review 2: From Norvelt to Nowhere by Jack Gantos is a bit of a bonkers book. A twelve year old boy ends up driving across America
... morewith an eccentric, but very cool, old lady, (who loves Eleanor Roosevelt). She is intent on taking revenge on a local murderer! It is the sequel to an earlier book which also has the supposed villain Spizz in it. The protagonist is called Jack and there is always a lot of the author himself in Gantos’ writing. (I remember him saying so when he was our school’s visiting author) so who knows how closely it links to his own adventures. It was all a bit too madcap and daft for me to really engage with. The plot was interesting and full of twists and turns. It would probably appeal to Year 5 or 6. less
