It’s the final Week in Books of 2017! I hope everyone has a safe and fun New Years as we finally say goodbye to this horrible year. Here’s to a better 2018!
I’ve gotten through a few books in the last couple weeks and here they are:
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi – This is a fantastic novel of interconnected chapters sharing the history of two families up to the present generation. I loved the flow and the characters, and really thought the concept of moving through the generations chapter by chapter worked well. Very emotional at times and with a wonderful conclusion. Beautifully written!
The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich – This novel, one of many by Erdrich including The Round House (which I loved), is about a crime committed in a small town and the fallout of vigilante justice. It jumps around in time and between characters, which at times I found a bit hard to follow, but in the end everything ties together. I didn’t like it as much as The Round House but still very enjoyable.
Human Acts by Han Kang – This is the new novel (2016) from the author of Booker Prize shortlist title The Vegetarian, which was amazing. And Human Acts did not disappoint! This is an incredibly powerful story about a student uprising in South Korea told from several different perspectives. It was graphic, slightly disturbing, and unforgettable. Highly recommended!
Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez – I wasn’t sure what I was getting with this collection of short stories, but once I got going I had a hard time picking just one favourite. This is an excellent series of soft-horror style stories with a touch of magic realism, which was unexpected but very engaging. All stories were strong and very original!
Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – I’ve picked this one back up and so far it’s great! As the newly updated cover describes it, Signal to Noise is perfect for people that enjoyed watching Stranger Things. It’s about a teenage girl who uses music as magic, which is a neat concept! Looking forward to blasting through this one.
I also picked up a few books from GIRO this week that look really interesting. They have paperback books there for 3 for $1, so this was a cheap stack that should keep me busy for a bit!
