Southern Pines & Pinehurst, NC Travel Guide

In search of an easy, affordable and quiet getaway? If you reside in North Carolina, Southern Pines/Pinehurst is a lovely place to spend the weekend or just one night (like we did).

The area is known for its golf courses and charming, artsy shops. The town of Southern Pines is also generously sized while still maintaining that “small southern town” feel. It features a little movie theatre, yoga studio, ice cream parlor, ornate guitar shop and many more charming retail spaces.

For our one-night stay, we chose to rent an Airbnb in Southern Pines. It was a 1BR/1BA apartment located on a picturesque horse farm and only a 15 min. drive away from town. Upon arrival, we met one of the host’s horses, Rocky. He was so sweet and if there ever was such a thing as a horse hug, he gave me one.

That evening we went to dinner at Ironwood Cafe (just 15 minutes away from the B&B). It’s an upscale, local steakhouse restaurant with a gorgeous atmosphere. I would recommend dining outside as we did if the weather is nice. The outdoor space features covered, comfortable seating that overlooks the restaurant’s herb garden. A large fountain sits in the middle making for a romantic date-night scene.

We started with the “chefs snack”; a pork stuffed flauta served with coleslaw and bbq sauce. For my entree I ordered the pistachio crusted salmon and my date had the steak. I’d argue that I ordered the better dish, but he disagreed. I guess you can’t go wrong with either!

Following dinner we drove to the cute town of Southern Pines where we stopped at The Ice Cream Parlor for a double scoop of banana pudding (our favorite).

The following morning I woke up to the sound of the host’s cat meowing for her breakfast. However, I can’t complain too much because I too was served a lovely breakfast. The place came with an 8AM delivery of homemade cinnamon buns, beautifully baked eggs, buttered english muffin, homemade jam and fresh cut fruit paired with orange juice and a cup of coffee. Yum!

On our drive home to Raleigh, we happened to spot a blackberry farm and stopped to pick some fresh berries. The owner of Olde Carthage Farm was extremely friendly and insisted on snapping some artsy couples-photos of us (insert cry-laughing face here). It was an unexpected great ending to our short trip!

xx
