When awards are handed out for cultural perseverance, Theatre Knoxville Downtown will undoubtedly be one of the first called to the stage to receive acclaim for their tenacity and longevity. According to their website-
Theatre Knoxville was chartered in March 1976 as part of a downtown development program. It was felt that a community theatre actively housed in a center city location would act as a catalytic agent for the then-Mayor’s urban renewal plan. The theatre performed in a variety of venues for decades before finding a permanent home, offering a wide range of adult and children’s plays and workshops. TKD entered its current space at 319 N. Gay Street in 2005.
Seeking a more amenable space for their productions, the organization currently has its eye on a new space in the structure currently housing Carmichael Auto Repair at 213 E. Fifth Avenue. And, they are in the midst of a fundraising effort to make this happen. (See information on this potential development at Inside of Knoxville.)
In the meantime, their schedule of theatre continues unabated. A production of Clybourne Park opens on Friday, February 17, 2017, and runs through March 5. The play by Bruce Norris won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 2011 and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2012. The Broadway production ran for 157 performances in 2012. This TKD production is directed by Ed White.
