THIS year’s Hilton Arts Festival offers both the very young — and the young at heart — to experience the magic of theatre.
Written and performed by Avril Cunning, Granny Susan Incredible tells the story of an 82-year-old granny, who uses her superpowers to solve problems.
Festival-goers are invited to step into her magical house for a cup of tea and help her combat the problems facing the children who write in to her — that’s if she can find her glasses…
The show, which uses both physical and shadow theatre, is being staged in the Music Block at Hilton College at 12.15 pm on Saturday, September 16 and 10 am on Sunday, September 17. R50.
Well Worn Theatre Company brings their unique brand of educational theatre to the festival with Plastocracy, an exploration of a world of waste and what it might breed.
At the play’s heart is a forlorn creature, which slowly rises out of the discarded detritus of humanity. Gaining consciousness and determined to live, it tumbles over the landscape, hurtling downriver and out into the ocean to meet a vast, swirling petrochemical ooze. In its mind is a single thought: who am I?’
Plastocracy aims to broaden young audiences’ understanding of the catastrophic impacts of plastic waste on eco-systems.
Directed by Kyla Davis, with puppet design by Francois Knoetze, and featuring the talents of Lerato Sefoloshe, Sanelisiwe Yekani, Lea Vivier, Mlindeli Zondi and Antonio Van Lendt, the play can be seen in the Music Block at 2.30 pm on Saturday, September 16 and 11.45 am on Sunday, September 17. Tickets are R50.
Another treat for young festival-goers is Taking Flight, a family show presented by Hijinks Theatre and ZikkaZimba Productions, which pays tribute to much loved author, Roald Dahl’s early childhood stories.
Follow him as a young school boy as he goes into Mrs Pratchett’s sweet shop and find out why he went to boarding school. You may even meet his favourite teacher along the way.
You can also plunge into the scrumdiddlyumtious worlds inside his head and encounter dirty beasts, filthsome creatures, crocky-wocks and witches.
Performances of Taking Flight will be staged in the Music Block at 10 am on Saturday, September 16 and 1.30 pm on Sunday, September 17. Tickets are R50.
