review 1: Mountain Echoes follows Jo as she returns "home" to North Carolina on the heels of her adventures in Ireland. She reconnects with her father, high school friends (acquaintances? enemies?), and her son. As in each of the novels as we move forward, Jo is more in control of her power and herself than the last time we met. The battle against the "Master" continues, here, with a new type of attack. We have a lot more time travel and things start to make sense as the time lines come together. I wasn't a fan of No Dominion, but reading it before Mountain Echoes will make a big difference as you move through the last two books in this series. Overall, I thought this novel was stronger than the previous two in the series. There is a lot more action in this novel than in the e... morearly books and a lot more involvement with those not in the know when it comes to magic, etc.
review 2: My goodness! Are we going for the record of how much mayhem can happen in a 2-week period? Wicked pace. This book was better than the last. The crazy confusing scenes at least held together coherently. My one beef is that the bad guys are always seen from such a distance, with their power undefined and therefore you lose some menacing power. One second she's amazed at the power of the master, and the next, she talks about how depleted he is and the next, she throws herself bodily against him. We never know what she's facing, so we can't get that spooky anticipatory feeling. And when is Joanne going to fight a battle in which she has some actual strength behind her punch? I'm just waiting for her to throw out something that actually does some good. I get that the theme of muddling through on a wing and a prayer is what defines her unique strength, but gosh it would be satisfying to see her swing and hit a homer just once. less
