Thor v1 #144b (September 1967)

Marvel Number: AHA0055

Writer: Stan Lee

Artist: Jack Kirby

Synopsis: Thor, Fandral, and Hogun face Satan’s 40 horsemen, but as they are not truly alive they never truly die. Defeating them simply means they will come back. Feeling overwhelmed, Thor and the others are happy when help comes in the form of Alibar, the former thief. He tells them how Mogul wanted him to lead those horsemen, but as they hate all who live including him, that did not seem like the best option to him. Instead he chooses to fight alongside them. Mogul flies above the land of Zanadu preparing to unleash his spotted plague. The 40 horsemen have regrouped and prepare to attack again, yelling, “For Satan!” But then they are all suddenly snuffed out of existence by a blast from Volstagg’s Rod of Wondrous Wizardry. (Yes, I know how that sounds and they undoubtedly did too.)

Notes: Nice to see Alibar back and as a hero no less. I get the feeling we shouldn’t get too attached to him though.

There is a fairly unintentionally funny moment when having fought back the horsemen, Hogun says, “Never before have Satan’s horsemen failed their first attack.”, but on the page before the narration clearly states that Mogul just willed them into existence. So sure, they never before have failed…or succeeded for that matter.

Also I have to wonder how many kids back in 1967 had parents freaking out at the ‘For Satan!’ panel.
