Synopsis:

The hilarious new novel from Lindsey Kelk, author of the bestselling I Heart series

Everyone loves a bridesmaid – except Maddie, who’s perpetually asked to be one.
Everyone loves a wedding – except Maddie’s best friend, who’s getting divorced.
And everyone loves the way Maddie’s so happy behind the scenes – except Maddie herself.
One best friend is in wedding countdown while the other heads for marriage meltdown. And as Maddie juggles her best chance at promotion in years with bridezilla texts and late-night counselling sessions, she starts to wonder – is it time to stop being the bridesmaid?

Mrs R’s review:

Always the Bridesmaid is the tenth book by British chic lit author Lindsey Kelk. I’ve been a fan of Lindsey since her I Heart Series and her stand-alone novels are just as good. Always the Bridesmaid is a fun, hilarious look into the world of dating, marriage and divorce in the U.K through the eyes of single Maddie.

The structure of Always the Bridesmaid had me hooked from the start. The story is written in a journal format with Maddie as the narrator. The journal isn’t just any journal, it’s specifically for bridesmaids and it is Maddie’s best friend Lauren that is the bride. Maddie begins each chapter with what she feels and what she is grateful for ‘British reserve’. These little extras always put a smile on my face. Maddie also had to answer questions throughout the journal and this was a quick, easy way to get to know more about Maddie, ‘Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Still trying to answer this question’. So much of the journal was completely over the top ‘You are no longer just the person you were when you woke up today. You are a bridesmaid’ that it had me in stitches and very grateful that I’m already married!

Maddie, Lauren and Sarah were all fantastic girls that I had a blast spending time with. Maddie and her other bestie, Sarah, are the working-class girls dealing with one crisis after another. Maddie has the boss from hell in an events company and has had various degree of success dating. She’s the peace maker in the trio that wants to keep everyone happy. Which means agreeing to organise Lauren’s wedding for her.

Sarah is at a different stage in her life as she is about to become reluctantly divorced after her husband decides it’s not working out. Sarah is an upfront, honest woman which lead to some very funny, yet painful, arguments and situations. One of my favourites was at Lauren’s hens night when the ice queen, Lauren’s mother, unexpectedly turns up.

The bride to be, Lauren, was the princess of the group as she came from money. She quickly morphs into bridezilla with her outrageous requests and expects Maddie to be available 24/7. For free. While Sarah is honest, Lauren lacks tact, making many unintentional comments that had me reeling and lead to fractures within the group. This is what happens in real life though so I appreciated the raw honesty of these confrontations. People say and do things they don’t always mean.

Always the Bridesmaid is a quick, easy read where you will be able to identify with Maddie, Lauren or Sarah as they navigate the hurdles that modern life throws at them.
