Hey guys! I’m back with another Top 5 Wednesday post! Since it’s nearly Halloween I thought I’d discuss some books with spooky scenes and I find that I get scared more by non-scary books than I do scary books, if that makes sense?! I probably feel more prepared with a scary book because I’m expecting it to be scary but if I read a book with some spooky scenes that I wasn’t expecting, it catches me off guard!
In this post we can discuss books you found frightening or just specific scenes from those books that weren’t technically supposed to scare you, but did. Enjoy!
This group was created by Lainey (Gingerreadslainey) and is hosted by Sam (ThoughtsOnTomes). If you want to participate, check out the link on Goodreads here.
1) The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
If you have been reading my blog for a while then you probably already know how much this book scared me. The start of it was terrifying and then there are some scenes later on that thoroughly creeped me out. This book gave me chills and I actually had goosebumps when I was reading it. It honestly scared the hell out of me and I really wasn’t expecting it! Definitely one of my favourite non-horror books! Plus the setting is kind of creepy too because it’s an apocalyptic book with cranks/zombies!
2) Watching You by Arne Dahl
I found the start of this book absolutely terrifying. It was really nail-biting because you were just thrown right in with no idea what was happening. It was one of the best openings to a book and I really wasn’t expecting it. It completely threw me off how creepy the opening scene was and my heart was honestly pounding in anticipation! It is a crime thriller but they don’t normally scare me like this book did!
2) If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
This book was amazing, amazing, amazing! I wasn’t expecting it to be scary, but when one of the characters turns up dead I was freaking out because it was so scary! It was such a creepy scene and I had shivers running down my spine. This book is so enthralling, it really does pull you into the story. When they discover the dead body it really feels like you are standing amongst them, staring down at their dead friend. It really scared me because it was such an intense scene. I wasn’t expecting for it to pull me in like it did.
3) The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle
A lot of Sherlock Holmes stories have been quite creepy or intense but this one probably scared me the most! This is my favourite Sherlock story, I have read it so many times and it never fails to draw me in. It’s really captivating because it’s set in the moors in the middle of nowhere which is very creepy. You can get completely lost there and on top of that there are crazy people and a hell-hound on the loose. I wouldn’t like to be out there in the middle of the night! A lot of scenes in this book had the hairs on the back of my neck rising! I was completely engrossed in the story and the setting.
I can’t think of a fifth one, sorry! These are the ones that stood out to me most just because they caught me off guard and I was left feeling creeped out! Please feel free to share any links to your posts because I would love to see what non-horror books scared you! I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading! Happy Halloween, everyone!
