Trevor Carroll is a prolific Indigenous director, actor, writer, visual artist, film producer and martial artist in Vancouver, BC. Of his many creative fields and accomplishments, his film No Reservations has been highly successful on the festival circuit, recently winning the 2017 Reel World Impact Award in the Short Film category. This film flips the script on the highly publicized and controversial Standing Rock, ND pipeline protests, imagining what would happen if a First Nations company was given approval to run a pipeline through a white, suburban neighborhood.
“I wanted to give a different perspective and put people in our shoes to see how it would feel if we put a pipeline underneath their land,” Carroll tells CBC. The film was shot in eight days on a $1,000 budget as part of the Crazy8s filmmaking challenge.

5 Questions for the Artist:
1. What is art to you?
Art is anything that expresses who we are as individuals. It can be as simple as a sketch scribbled on a napkin, elaborate as a installation, or most commonly a beautiful painting. Could be a lot of different things.
2. What did you make in the past and why?
I’ve made a lot of things. I grew up always finding a way of expressing myself. I made a lot of sketches of my favorite comics growing up, to some of my better work which I made in Art classes in college. It’s really interesting being trained in classic styles, like pottery, weaving, photography, design and color theory. I’ve used a lot of the training I’ve learned in these classes and applied them to my film and video production projects. I’ve done some stop motion, some motion graphics, basically made improvements in every area I’ve needed to make my projects look as good as possible.
3. What are you making now and why?
I just made a short film – No Reservations – which has done very well on the festival circuit. I am very thankful for the opportunity to have my work featured in front of a large audience. I just made a baby. Her name is Cardinal, and she’s amazing. Going on two months of fun with her.
4. What are your hopes for the future?
I have a lot of ideas for projects I would like to do in the future, but right now I’m just concentrating on being a good father and a good man. That’s really all that matters.
5. What else would you like to say?
There was a dark time about a year and a half ago that I came out of and I don’t want to go back there again. I came to the realization that we only have one life, and it’s extremely short. So if you’re reading this, please take all of the opportunities that come your way and make the most of your life.

Multi-faceted and an accomplished producer, cinematographer, editor and actor in addition to being a talented director, Trevor Carroll is perhaps best known for his work as director and producer for Battlefield Fight League, Western Canada’s premier mixed martial arts fighting association. Since 2010, Trevor has directed and produced dozens of fight events for Battlefield Fight League, catapulting the careers of several of British Columbia’s mixed martial arts fighters. His memorable directorial, producing and EPK work includes notable Canadian short films such as The Haunted Restaurant winner of Best Comedic Horror Short Film in the Tabloid Witch Awards competition, and Socky Kong for the Trick17 Stop Motion Film Competition, for which he won Best Sound Design.
His work has garnered him numerous award nominations, including recent wins the Reelworld Impact Award at the 2017 Reelworld Film Festival, 2017 Award of Merit for the Native/Aboriginal Peoples category at the Accolade Competition as well as the 2017 Award of Merit Special Mention at the Best Shorts Competition for No Reservations. An avid collector of comic books, films and art, Trevor now lives in Vancouver, BC with his family and is currently working on obtaining his Black Belt in Taekwondo in his spare time.
