review 1: This is Escher meets Borges. What a delight. Each of the stories had a startling view of a person's essence. In one story a famous actor/director gets tired of his fame and tries to find his way free of his persona. He goes to a club with impersonators and waches someone impersonate him. Then, he attempts to impersonate himself and the trouble begins. In another, a woman winds up in a war zone with an author friend and finds herself stranded by him--whether it's in his story or in reality is never clear. Each story is unique and the writing is delicious.
review 2: I found this book to be very engaging, mostly because I would not let myself put it down until I found some semblance of a plot in it. I knew the book was organized in different episodes, yet I had so
... moreme sort of hope that everything would come together at some point, which it does in a way. The interconnected plot and the vague distinction between what is a story, what is not, and which of the stories are stories in a story keeps you reading mostly just to figure out what's going on. The novel also unmasked some of the deceptions behind our modern idea of fame - how even wildly famous people may not be recognized in other parts of the world and how a struggle to maintain fame may turn a person against all aspects of their beliefs and leave a person a false shell of what they truly think. The book also shows the thing many of us understand in this modern age: how quickly fame can unravel and a person can cease to even be recognized for what they were once viewed as. Overall, a very interesting and insightful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. less

The first story was pretty good, then they just got stranger, confusing, bleak and frustrating.
