Try a Chapter | #1

I have really been having the hardest time reading a book and enjoying it immensely. My recent reads have all been around 3 stars which is a huge bummer for me. I’m missing that feeling of being devoured into a book and constantly wanting to turn the page to see what happens next.

Since I’ve been missing that feeling, but also don’t know which books to pick up and try, I decided to give a go to the Try a Chapter tag. I chose ten books and had a best friend, Larkin @ Wonderfilled Reads, choose which five I will try first. Hopefully there will be a 4 or 5 star book in this pile! I’m dying for one.

Up first is one of my most anticipated reads, Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco!

I have been dying to read this book since I’ve heard about it. The idea of it is so interesting to me! I’m really hoping this is one I liked because of how hyped up I’ve made it.

The chapter was pretty short only being eight pages. We’re introduced to our main character, Audrey Rose, and her uncle. Not a whole lot happens but the scene is pretty intriguing. So far, so good!

Next: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

To be honest, I’m not expecting much from this. For some strange reason, I can never get into Gaiman’s work. I’ve tried with both Stardust and The Graveyard Book and I ended up DNF’ing both of them. But I found this at a thrift store for only $1 and I couldn’t pass up the deal.

While reading, I surprisingly found myself continuing on to chapter 2 before I even realized I was doing it! I’m enjoying the writing style and also the narrator so far. I’m really interested to see where this goes. Also, how freaking beautiful is this cover?

Third: Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson

This will be my first Rae Carson book, even though Girl of Fire and Thorns has been on my TBR shelf for literally 3 years now. But I’m interested in a historical fiction right now plus fantasy, so why not try this one! Double whammy! And again, look how beautiful this cover is.

Unfortunately, the first chapter of this kind of bored me. It was very short but underwhelming. I’ve heard great things about this trilogy and I do want to give it a shot, but maybe not right now.

Next: A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor

I just received this in a trade I did on Twitter. I honestly don’t know much about it but I saw it around so figured I would give it a shot. The cover is honestly what got me… it’s gorgeous.

I’ve read the first chapter and uhh… I’m kind of confused? I know what is happening but also not exactly at the same time, which I guess is kind of the whole point. We’ve met the 3 main characters, but I’m getting off vibes from the sisters, which again, I guess is the point. I’m intrigued to see where it goes but there are other books I’ve read so far that I’m more drawn to.

Last: Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I’m eery about this pick. I’ve heard mixed reviews about this one but since I’m such a huge of The Lunar Chronicles written by the same author, I want to give this a go.

Unfortunately, I’m just not in the mood. I’m really wanting to read a book that I’m already dying to get back to, so I’m just going to put this aside again and hopefully will be willing to pick this up at a later date.

I did it! I read 5 (ok, technically 4) books and I’ve decided which one I want to continue on with. I kind of already knew I wanted to continue on with this one since the beginning, but I wanted to give every book a fair chance! (Except you, Heartless. I’m sorry.) I know ya’ll are probably dying to see which book I chose….

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco!

This novel has been on my radar since it came out and I’m so stoked to finally be able to read it. I’ve had the ARC of the sequel, Hunting Prince Dracula, for months now and I feel so guilty about it since I haven’t even read the first one yet. I’m really excited to see where this goes! I’m really needing a book that I can just devour and fall in love with.

Stay tuned for episode 2 where I have my other best friend, Jessica aka @literarilyjess on Twitter, choose my next five books!

Have you read any of the books I’ve tried out? Let me know how you like them in the comments below! I would love to hear your thoughts on them and whether I should continue reading them or not!
