review 1: The story and world are very dark, separated from bleak only by a thin ribbon of hope running through it.Dense worldbuilding (if this is your first book in the series, you will be confused; if you've read others in the series, you still may be confused at times). Much more urban fantasy in feel than the erotic/paranormal romance tone of the first two.The heroine, Rebekka, is a-maz-ing. Really loved her. Strong, loyal, resilient, compassionate and capable of making very difficult choices and accepting the consequences. The hero, Aryck, is very much a Jory Strong alpha-male type, torn between duty and his (fated-mate) attraction to Rebekka. He's not quite as interesting to me as some of the other characters in the series, though. In some ways, he seems like Rebekka's reward ... more-- a symbol of everything she might have if she makes the right choices, even if she doesn't know what those choices are. In a genre-romance sense, it doesn't completely work for me, but in a genre-fantasy sense it does.I enjoyed this more than I was expecting to (the brothel angle made me fear a baffling romanticism of prostitution or a repulsive focus on depravity, but the author managed to make it seem like a frank portrayal of trafficking without being too gratuitous -- though it came close a few times near the end).Looking forward to/hoping for another book in the series.
review 2: It was easy for me to believe in Rebekka's character. She had a sweet disposition, a suspicious mind, and a strong inner strength. Even with all the cruelty and prejudices around her, she showed compassion and healed those in need, regardless of her personal feelings. She believed she had a purpose, a reason for being given her gift. She believed she was destined to help the outcast weres.Aryck, was not only son to leader of his clan, but he was the clan's enforcer. He took pride in his duty to protect his clan. He grew up with an belief, purebreds were superior to all mixed breeds and humans. Interestingly enough, when his jaguar beast claimed Rebekka as his mate, it was his human side that had trouble accepting it. However, it wasn't long before Rebekka opened his heart and opened his eyes. I enjoyed reading the chemistry between Rebekka and Aryck. It was sweet, sensual, and slow building, which in my opinion, built more sexual anticipation. Aryck began to believe, the The Ancients wished for him to be Rebekka's mate. But, there were those in the clan, who would go to any lengths, to prevent that from happening. Rebekka and Aryck will each be given a choice, between matters of the heart and thier duties. The choices they make will effect the outcome of both outcast and clan.I thought the post-apocalyptic world building was amazing. It was gritty, cruel and very realistic. It was interesting to me, that I felt the were-outcast, being part animal, were at times, more humane than the humans, and that some of the humans, were nothing more than savage animals. I also thought it intriguing, there were beings that were using the inhabitants on the planet, as nothing more than pawns in thier games. In truth, I found the plot to be very compelling and intriguing. It was well written and filled with action, suspense, romance and destinies.Overall, I loved this book. I wish I had known before reading it, that this was the 3rd installment in a series. Fortunately for me, I was able to read it as a stand alone. The characters were richly developed with both personality and substance. I found them to be very engaging. I also thought the plot was compelling, unique, and thought provoking. One of the many reasons I loved this book, was it made me ask alot of "what ifs". Jory Strong created an urban fantasy, that was not only edgy, dynamic, and gritty, it was fantastical and left my imagination filled with possiblities. less
