review 1: My Name is Mina, by Cynthia Vogit is unique novel about a 9 year old girl that has a different perspective on life. Her name is Mina. She loves alone with her Mother, her Father passed away when she was little. At school Mina doesn't fit in. The kids call her names, and her teacher gets mad at her because she doesn't understand Mina's extraordinary personality. This often results in Mina's Mother taking her out of school and homeschooling her. When Mina gets lonely at home she climbs her special tree in the backyard and watches the blackbirds(who have just made a nest)while writing in her journal. Soon, a family moves in across the street. The family includes a husband, wife(who is pregnant), and a gloomy boy who looks like he is Mina's age. Mina gets excited and nervous a... morebout this new arrival in the neighborhood. Near the end of the story for one day, Mina goes to a special school for strange, unique people like herself. Mina makes some friends there, which makes her happy since she hasn't had friends in a very long time, but at the end of the day she realizes that she isn't ready to be around the other kids. Throughout the whole story Mina shares important memories from her past.I really love this novel, I think it does a fantastic job of showing people a different way we can see the world and everything that exists. One of my favorite parts in the novel is when Mina is writing for school and she describes what her story is doing. Mina describes,"They flew off in strange and beautiful directions and took my story on a very unexpected course"(14). I like this part because I feel like I can really relate to what Mina is thinking. This is one of the best novels I've read, every sentence teaches me a different way to view life.I recommend this novel to people 9 and up. Someone who really enjoys nature and interesting stories, will love this novel. I'm sure that everyone can relate to one thing Mina explains. Everyone has a secret Mina as a part of their personality.
review 2: Lovely little book, and thoroughly entertaining! Reading this felt like being granted a sneak peek into my own history. To be immersed with such familiarity into the mind of young Mina was like pulling on clothes warm from the dryer, like closing the front door behind you after a long day. Comforting, safe, right.I especially love Mina's curiosity about the natural world around her, and pondering various philosophies. Her thoughts go for walks, as mine so often do, and David Almond does an incredible job of capturing the intrinsic beauty in a wandering wonder.I will return to this book when I am beaten down by reality and need to remember how much more wonderful everything is through the eyes of a curious, imaginative child. less

Compared with Skellig, this was a masterpiece. Mina's character view is very interesting.
