So the first 3 books I absolutely loved but then there was that long period of waiting for the forth that broke my momentum a bit but I got back into the story surprisingly easy. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this one as much.
Alex finds herself in the middle of chaos once again without meaning to interfere. But once she promises help for somebody she doesn’t tops until it fulfilled even if it means going toe-to-toe with ex-employers, the police.
A new mystery for Alex to investigate presents itself when she finds some walking corpses inhabited by souls not their own. And while I usually like the investigative process, in this case it not really written in a spectacular or overly good way. However, it’s not only a criminal element she has to deal with, her personal life is in shambles too.
I generally like Alex character she is bad ass in her way, she relentlessly chases the truth and its always interesting to follow her adventures. However in this book the dark side of her powers, meaning the temporary blindness, hinders here more than expected and it kind of slows the plot down. There are quite a few twists in the plot and more than the usual amount of fighting too. Only they are so dragged out that I found most of it boring. Not something you aspire to feel reading a fighting scene.
Alex other personal problems mainly concerned her relationship with Death and while I always was team Death I completely agree with his points. They already has a dangerous relationship and Alex kinda exploits it for all the wrong reasons and asks more and more from Death, secret wise. It’s like she only looks for him when she wants something. I understand why things happened as they did but feel like some of the past storylines was a waste of time it ended like this so quickly.
What or who I really hated was Briar, her attitude and behavior. It pissed me off how callously she exploited and used Alex.
Its and interesting case if not the most eventful or exciting. What I missed the most in these books is the character development. Alex changes and learns with time but the other characters are stagnant and they get pushed into the background more and more with each story.
So I didn’t enjoy this book but I’m still curious how Alex story will continue because I feel there is so much more to these characters and universe.
