What I think of the book:
Stories with cheating characters are a hit or miss for me. In the case of Junkyard Heart, it’s a hit.
Jas has to deal with a broken heart, Kim has to battle his own demons and so this book has a premise that could turn it into a difficult, angst-filled read. Instead, this is a story about second chances. About giving them and about learning that we deserve them.
When reading a Garrett Leigh novel, it’s always the characters that grab me more than the story. The author has a way of making them real and relatable, and this book was no exception. I got attached to Jas, Kim and Red (a female; that’s all I’m going to say so you wouldn’t get a spoiler) pretty quickly. Even when they were being unreasonable (the boys anyway). And when I knew they were doing the wrong thing (wouldn’t be much of a story, if they only ever did the right thing). And in those moments when they were being stubborn and all I wanted to do was push them towards each other and shout ‘Now kiss!’…
Anyway, you get the picture: addictive characters.
So, the story was good, we avoided the cheating character situation being unrealistic or annoying, and we have interesting characters; any more pros about the book?
Well, while this is Book 7 in the series, you can read it as a standalone since the other books have other main characters!
What about cons?
If you are looking for a very original setting, you won’t find it here. As I said, the book is catchy, but the story is basically two trouble souls meeting, falling for each other and trying to help one another.
And that’s okay. I love stories like that. And thanks to the way the characters are portrayed, this one sticks in my mind even though I’ve read many like it.
Who would I recommend this book to? I’d recommend Junkyard Heart to readers who believe that everyone deserves a chance in love.
