review 1: Margo Lanagan writes beautifully, with details that evoke the places and people beautifully. This is a collection of 4 stories - I enjoyed them all, with Bajazzle evoking both a fascinating slightly askew world and producing a lovely presentation of a truly unpleasant pov character. I find many authors try to write from the perspective of a jerk or a dill but just leave the reader confused - here the world and the character's failings appear in symmetry with each other. Also disturbingly erotic.
review 2: Four new previously unpublished stories of typical, unsurprising wondrousness from Lanagan in a delightful package from 12PP. Cracklescape includes "The Duchess Dresser", "The Isles of the Sun", "Bajazzle", and "Significant Dust". The stories sometimes sit asl... moreant genre expectations, but sometimes deliver to them, and the best of them - which for today I think is "Significant Dust" - stand amongst the very best short fiction of the year. If I don't see Cracklescape all over awards ballots in 2013 I'll be very, very surprised! less
