review 1: Sunny is a car in this 70's story of growning up in 70's Japan. The production qualities of this hard cover are impressive, though also kind of muted. The art is what stands out. The story, the dialogue, all seem muted to me; it's a look back, not so much for teens as adults looking back on their boyhood. I think teens would be bored by it, but I liked it okay. It's subtle, evocative, sort of enigmatic, lovely in its way…poetic at its best.
review 2: A slice of life from one of my favorite comics creators. Sunny is not the mood of the story, but rather the model of an abandoned car used as a sort of fort by the kids in a home for orphans and other children whose parents aren't around. His most famous translated work (Tekkon Kinkreet) is kinetic and over the t... moreop, but this work is quiet and grounded. Wonderful illustration and composition, as usual, with a couple of color pieces included. I can't wait for the next volume. less
