Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand Review

Wow. Wow wow wow. I’m not wowing because of this book, I’m wowing because of how crazy my December has been. My reading goals have gone down the drain and I’m just barely scraping by. It’s the 21st and I’ve only completed two whole books this month, and that makes me really sad. Christmas time is a busy time when you are a mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, apparently.

Anywho, I was able to finish this quick little nugget, Winter Street, and I have to say, it charmed me. I mentioned on my Instagram page that this was probably my biggest bandwagon read of 2017. Everyone, literally EVERYONE, on bookstagram is reading this series right now, so when I saw that my library had a copy I figured I should see what all the fuss was about. I mean, look at this cover. Is it not the most enticing Christmas read ever? It sucked me in like a vacuum.

Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket’s Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. Patrick, the eldest, is a hedge fund manager with a guilty conscience. Kevin, a bartender, is secretly sleeping with a French housekeeper named Isabelle. Ava, a school teacher, is finally dating the perfect guy but can’t get him to commit. And Bart, the youngest and only child of Kelley’s second marriage to Mitzi, has recently shocked everyone by joining the Marines.

As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. But when he walks in on Mitzi kissing Santa Claus (or the guy who’s playing Santa at the inn’s annual party), utter chaos descends. With the three older children each reeling in their own dramas and Bart unreachable in Afghanistan, it might be up to Kelley’s ex-wife, nightly news anchor Margaret Quinn, to save Christmas at the Winter Street Inn.

Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

This book was soooooo cute. I’d heard that if you liked the show Parenthood you would like this book, and I totally agree with that statement. This definitely has Parenthood vibes mixed with something resembling one of my favorite Christmas movies, The Family Stone. Winter Street is filled with multiple characters who all have their own set of dramas, and they all mesh together to make one great story.

If you are looking for a quick and light read to entertain you during your downtime (if you have any) this Christmas season, I highly recommend this one. It’s easy to read and moves really smoothly from start to finish. I can so dreamily envision reading this beaut while soaking in a lavender scented bubble bath with a nice glass of white wine sitting next to me. Unfortunately, that’s not my reality, but it COULD be yours. So do it!

Merry Christmas, everyone! If not sooner, I will be back after Santa magically appears with a 2017 reflection/wrap up. Then in 2018, I’ve got some new things planned for The Fettered Matriarch that I’m pretty darn excited about. Stay tuned!
