Simple Truth
People come into this world and a lot of them arrive at the conclusion, or better said, they arrive at the big questions, those questions being: Why am I here? Who am I? and Where am I going? And of course, most people would say, “You are a human being, get on with it, don’t worry about all that stuff or you’ll end up becoming some kind of religious nut!” So yes, a lot of people don’t do deep because they are afraid of what they might find. And what do you find when you decide to do deep? Well, you find all of this religious text that talks about man as being both body and spirit and so you find yourself happy with this conclusion because the general conclusion is that the most important part of you is your spirit and not your body and the idea of living for your spirit is that you will one day leave this body behind and go on to a better life, depending upon how well you did spiritually in this life of course!
So that’s the simplistic view on body and spirit but then you go further down the road with this and you find all of these conflicting views and one of the conflicting views is that we are not only body and spirit but we are “body, spirit, and soul” so then things start to get a bit sticky because you find yourself thinking “Hang on a minute, I was happy with the idea that there is just two of me, that I am both body and spirit because this sounds really good to me because one day we are all going to die and so the fact that I am spirit in a body all looks good because I will have another life after this life and then maybe things will start looking up for me in that life and that it will turn out to be a better life than this life but I can’t seem to get my head around the idea that we are “body, spirit, and soul!” What, am I gonna split off into three different directions or something?!! There surely must be something wrong with a point of view like that! We can’t possibly be three people in one so what are you talking about?!!”
So what do we do about points of view like this? Well, most of us would-be deep thinkers choose to look into this matter further and what we find is that one major place where a lot of the confusion is coming from is 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (in the Bible). This verse talks about the God of peace sanctifying, or in other words, purifying someone wholly. So yes, we all need to be purified wholly, so good, here’s a verse that’s talking about the whole me because everything that is me sure needs some purifying and let’s face it, everyone of us could do with some real purifying, so yes, I’ll go along with that! So what’s God going to purify about me then? Let’s see what the verse says:
“And the very God of peace sanctify (purify) you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
So here we have St Paul who appears to be alluding to us being “spirit, and soul, and body” because he’s asking God to purify us wholly and that whole being, or in other words, “us” being spirit and soul and body, and he’s asking God to preserve us and keep us blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So this is all important stuff and I really do need to find out just what he means when he talks of me being “spirit, and soul, and body.” Well, it turns out that there really is a very very simple explanation, that explanation being that when you are talking about spirit you are talking about spirit, when you are talking about body you are of course talking about body, but what if you were talking about body and spirit? Then you are talking “Soul” because body and spirit = “Soul.” So this is the whole me he is talking about, he’s saying that I am “spirit, soul, and body” and he makes it quite clear by putting soul in the middle. So when you are talking spirit you are talking spirit and when you are talking body you are talking body and so putting soul in the middle of these two words makes every sense because soul means both spirit and body and he does a really good job here because he puts spirit first and body last because primarily we are spirit and so first and foremost we should put the spiritual above the physical and seeing as we are a spirit living in a body you can’t keep on calling someone a spirit and a body and so you have a word for spirit and body and that word is “Soul” – we are all living souls because that’s what we were called in the very beginning via Moses in the book of Genesis! God breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils and Adam from that point onwards became a “living soul,” in other words, he (Adam) was a body that was given a spirit via the spiritual breath of God and so Adam became a living soul, so we are ALL both body and spirit and the name for this is “Soul.”
So what a relief, we are all spirits that came here and that have been placed here in a body by God Himself and when the short span of all of our lives are over then we will all, in a sense, fly away out of here and in particular, if you have Jesus in your heart then you can’t possibly get lost when your spirit leaves this body because Jesus will send someone to come and get you and to show you what happens next and where you go next and what you do next and with whom, and so your new life will begin. So plenty to look forward to if you believe you are a living soul, or in other words, a…
