Hannah Vogel
review 1: I have loved all of the Hannah Vogel novels, and this one, set at the time of the Nazi-inspired night of vengeance on Jewish people in Berlin's ghetto, is the tensest of them all, the danger to Hannah, Anton and her associates and loved ones greater. The Nazi's are closing deadly nets around the Jewish citizens and the setting is so grim - but true to history - that it makes the headstrong Hannah's risky behavior even more dangerous.
review 2: Chick lit Berlin Noir. This is the second Cantrell Hannah Vogel novel I've read. I've not finished the first and fourth of the series. I'd hoped that between books #1 and #4, the writing would have improved but, sadly, that has not been the case. Vogel is still more concerned about her romances and her adopted son than th
... moree tide of history and this gets as old in this offering as it did in the first. The novel is researched but period details rarely appear in the sparsely written, screenplay like text. History truly takes a backseat to romantic triangles and motherhood in the Vogel book I've read. The title, too, is misleading as the night the title invokes doesn't actually begin until the last 20 or so pages. There is an intriguing murder plot but this is left to the ol' "sudden revelation" near the end to break. Not surprising really as Vogel's love life is always more important than the rise of Nazism. Cantrell is bringing Berlin Noir to, what I am guessing, is a mostly female audience and for that she has my thanks. As someone who is currently researching/writing a Berlin Noir novel of my own, I appreciate her efforst to expand the parameters of this growing sub-genre. As a reader though, I find the novel lacking and the subject matter much better handled by others. less
