review 1: I first read the novels Ms. Cantrell wrote with James Rollins. I found this book and was very pleased. I enjoy historical fiction. Hannah Vogel was a great character with a strong moral sense even at her own expense. This book was an easy read. The sentence structure was flowing. As I sat having my coffee, I felt I was there in the cafes, at the newspaper or in the apartments peering over Hannah's shoulder. She gave me a new sense of what Germany was like for German citizens when the Nazis were in the process of taking over. Most WW! and 2 fiction stories do not have such a strong female character nor do they discuss how people forged a life as Hitler poised to change everything. They also do not really address the struggle within the Nazi Party re: homosexuality. I am loo... moreking forward to reading her next book in this series also: "A Night of Long Knives."
review 2: Berlin, Germany in May 1931 is a city on the verge of change as the Nazi party is gaining in strength & the atrocities of Adolph Hitler is capable of are only just beginning to be thought possible. It is here that Rebecca Cantrell begins her "Hannah Vogel" series with "A Trace of Smoke". In this well written & thought out story we are introduced to Hannah Vogel who is still trying to comprehend the death of her brother Ernst while dealing with the unexpected arrival of Anton who claims to be her nephew. Cantrell weaves a story that is historically accurate as Hannah tries to solve the murder of her brother & also learns exactly how far the German government is willing to go to be rid of those that are counter to the beliefs of Hitler. The book is fast moving & engrossing as Hannah quest goes across all facets of Berlin & leads to a climax that is stunning & an ending that proves there is much more to this tale than we've seen so far. A good read with much more to come hopefully from this series. less
