review 1: If you want to read a book about Ted Bundy, this may not be what you are looking for. But if you are familiar with the man, his psyche and his crimes, this will add another dimension. There is, of course, some background on Ted Bundy- the circumstances of his birth, his family, and his early years. Rebecca Morris, the journalist/author, also had conversations with a woman who, along with her brother, spent a lot of time with a young Ted. She asserts that her father, who sexually abused her and her brother, also sexually abused Ted throughout the course of their friendship. But this book is about so much more. It is about a family whose young daughter/sister disappeared one stormy night from her home in Tacoma. A family, not perfect, but loving, struggling to cope with the ... moreloss, and the questions that remained, and will always remain, unanswered. It is an exploration of ambiguous loss, in general, and what it does to the lives of those affected. Morris also chronicles the contributions of the community in the search effort, and the drive of the two lead detectives on the case- men whose lives were forever intertwined with the Burr family, Bundy and other suspects, and who would always feel the loss of young Ann. And it is about the process of investigative journalism itself. Not directly, but in how the author presents the material. It's a fine and nuanced line to walk- presenting facts to the reader, while having already formulated her own opinion. In the end I think most people involved, including the author, the detectives, and the Burr family, believe that Ann Burr was Bundy's first murder, though the circumstances are unclear. Did she leave willingly or was she forced? Where is her body? Why wouldn't Bundy ever admit to it? But conclusion or no conclusion, bias or no bias, the story is worth reading, and is presented here, with care, by Morris.
review 2: SO-SO.TED AND ANN: The Mystery of a Missing Child and Her Neighbor Ted Bundy is an okay read, but not really all that interesting. Recommendation: Read Ann Rule's book, THE STRANGER BESIDE ME, instead. Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't? I don't feel like I know anymore now than before I read the book.
