review 2: I read this book in one sitting. The characters pretty much came alive. Eveline is a young bride. She leaves the safety and comfort of her old home to live with her husband Emil in the wilderness. Eveline and Emil build a nice life in their pre owned cabin. They have a baby named Hux. Eveline makes friends with Reddy and LuLu. Their closest neighbors. Emil has to leave Eveline to take care of his dying father in Germany. He is delayed from coming home by the war. After becoming pregnant from a rape, Eveline gives her baby away to an orphanage run by a horrible nun. Horrible in the way she shows her love. I liked Eveline's character. I spent most of the novel wanting to hear that something horrible had happened to the man who raped her... Evergreen is a very emotionally charged book. LuLu's son Gunther and Hux grow up to be best friends. Hux loses his parents. He looks for his sister Naamah. He is not at all prepared for what or who she is. But, he tries to make the best of things. I wish certain things in Evergreen were different. Like Eveline and Naamah being able to meet. And, Naamah not doing the same thing to her daughter that was done to her. But all in all, it was a great book. less

Sweet story, bordering on fantasy but not quite.
