review 1: Story was good but I didn't care for the writing style. It was difficult to make the switch between past and present parts of the story. I did like how the author referred to the parents as "their mother" or "their father" rather than make them their own characters. This way, while they were very important characters, they were separate from the "girls." I read this on my Kindle so maybe would have liked the writing style more if I read the print book.
review 2: This novel was a tricky one for me. There were times that I really enjoyed reading it, and other times were I was bored by the plot. ... moreps back to when they were teenagers (maybe in the 1940s?). Their life sadness began that summer, when they were teenagers, when their cousin comes to visit. I don't want to give away any plot twists, but things go downhill that year. I liked that the story unfolded slowly, but I was also impatient that the story unfolded slowly. The other thing is that I kept waiting for it to be a bigger deal that Milly and Twiss are "The Bird Sisters," as it is kind of skimmed over. So, I don't know: I liked the writing, but not always the plot or the characters. less

A drowsy book that really didn't do much at all...could have been a much better short story.
