review 1: This book was such an unexpected find, I love Dickens and to have a made up Charles Dickens with all the other characters come to life was such a treat! I had great hopes for Mathinna but the exercise of her being used as a social experiment said it all. To die at age 17 at the hands of a social experiment was such a tragedy and I felt really angry that she became an outcast in her own world. This was my first Flanagan book and I will be exploring more..
review 2: 4.5 stars. Gorgeous, ugly, heartbreaking, breathtaking. The death of one child who lives on in memory, the destruction of another who is respected by too few. This is a book that will be read again, one with so many layers that more will be revealed with each read.
