review 1: Dit is niet alleen een boek over de bouw van de Birmalijn door Australische krijgsgevangenen, het gaat ook over het leven van de hoofdpersoon, een chirurg. Ik heb zelden de oorlog in Azie zo beschrven gezien. De wreedheid en de zinloosheid van alles komt in de buurt van wat er in de nazikampen is gebeurd. Flanagan weet dit alles prachtig te beschrijven. Heel indringend, je leeft enorm mee met de personages in het boek. Soms erg heftig; ik heb het boek een aantal keren neer moeten leggen, a.h.w. om op adem te komen. Ik ga het vehaal niet vetellen,je moet het echt lezen.
review 2: I bought Flanagan´s book after reading a couple of reviews comparing it to McCarthy's "The Road" and because it had just won the Man Booker Prize. I have to say it was an excellent rea... mored, but a bit like The Goldfinch, I was expecting a more and received rather less. I can say though, that it is not like "The Road" in the least bit, neither in the power of its prose and imagery, nor in its use of language. The Road beats Flanagan´s book hands down. That said, TNRTDN is is a meditation on life, love, loss and the vacuity of it all. It follows the life of Dorrigo Evans a philandering doctor reduced to a shell of a man and a couple more characters from Australia, to the POW camps in Siam during WWII,on to middle and old age, reflecting on what one makes of this thing called life. less
