review 1: This is exactly my kind of book, combining science and literature and the Romantic era. I loved it. I was impressed with the inclusion of all of the poetry and how it all seemed to flow together. The only criticism I have is that I got a little lost on the dates, because the narrative is structured in a non-linear way. It tells a great story, but I got a little confused about who was alive at a certain point and what discoveries had or had not been made in certain chapters. On a Reader's Advisory note, this book is perfect for someone who loved the new 'Cosmos' television program. It goes into detail about William Herschel, Humphrey Davy, and, to some extent, Michael Faraday. All of whom were talked about in the program.
review 2: While it IS a fascinating look
... more at Victorian-era science, it's also wandering, chatty, and has waaaay too many footnotes. I've always thought footnotes should just be worked into the story and this book is a good example of why. The footnotes were long, numerous and necessary -- so why not just add them in the narrative? Perhaps it's just that it is difficult to read on a small-format e-reader like the Nook. It was also very illustrative of how life has changed. In those days, an inquisitive mind (accompanied by its body, of course) attended lectures by scientists and professors and inventors. Even dinner party hosts boasted about the dignitaries, poets and scientists/inventors on their A-List. These days we just do the google. Not nearly as social an endeavor. It's not easy to put all that info into 600+ pages, so that's probably why I still feel sort of disjointed and like I quickly perused a complicated science article. Still, I enjoyed the book, the era and the inventors/scientists. less
