review 1: Perfect book for summer/beach reading. Set a century ago in Amsterdam and then on a luxury liner bound for Capetown. The protagonist, Piet Barol, is a remarkably beautiful young man over whom the other characters--indeed, readers of every sexual persuasion--can project their desires and whims. Despite the title, Piet is merely an opportunist, not a user of people. He works very hard to navigate situations where people are determined to use him for his talents, and I fell under his spell, too. Now to find another book by this delightful writer.
review 2: Started okay and the mix of history with the soft-porno plot was a fast read and then (spoiler) the slide started and I knew the ending "would be continued". Maarten owned these 5 star hotels and decides to
... more build a super hotel in New York while closing down two to have their roofs repaired. His solution to his money problems is to spend each morning on his knees praying to God for more money. Piet brushes shoulders with the rich and famous and spreads his ass when he gets into a bind. less

I loved this book! So lush and vivid. I was pulled into its world and was not let go until the end.

I gave this 2 stars for the poor writing and the predictability factor.
