review 1: I truly liked it!!! I couldn't give up on it, halved my sleeping hours and delayed my first meal with a few hours just to read some more :))); I might even read the sequel :D The main character is a little bit fantastic: handsome, sculptured body, good manners, good voice, good general knowledge, ambition, self-confidence, I mean he is close to perfection, I cannot believe such a male specimen exists!! :))) But well, all that is nicely integrated in the story, a story pretty much credible, so I guess I'll close my eyes on it. On top of everything, lust was gorgeous "chiseled" and lubricated the way of the story to my heart. :p
review 2: At first I gave this book five stars based on the fact that I'd thoroughly enjoyed reading it, even if Piet Barol was a Gary S
... moreue; at least he was a Gary Sue of the most enjoyable kind. He was like a Victorian era Don Draper and Pete Campbell all rolled into one scamp who broke men and women's hearts right and left just by being pretty and charming. But then I started thinking about that "to be continued..." on the last page and I thought, "Well, will I read the sequel?" And the answer is probably not. Mainly because I, like many other readers, didn't really find Piet Barol's ultimate destination and ending situation all that interesting or appealing. Stacey wasn't enough of a character for me yet to care what happens in his adventures with her, and my surprising passion for Didier and how that all worked out left me unwilling to explore this world much further.Still, I loved the experience of reading it and enjoy the characters greatly. I think I preferred his time with Jacobina and Egbert the most, though felt that his use of Didier was terrible. (Though he thought it honorable.) I found myself feeling like these characters were real people I would miss when I was done reading. I do miss Egbert and I miss the hope I'd had for Didier, but I'm not missing Piet Barol or Stacey enough to care what happens to them further.Very enjoyable read. Happy as heck that I read it. Recommend it to fans of upstairs/downstairs books that focus on a variety of characters' lives and experiences, and don't really have a strong plot arc. I actually think this book would have made a fantastic television series. Several seasons of exploring these characters' lives and Piet Barol's adventures would have been amusing. less

Themed similar to Pot-Bouille, but much more readable. Looking forward to part deux.
