review 1: An interesting concept - this is a murder mystery but set in the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw in the midst of World War II. Erik Cohen, formerly a noted psychologist, moves into the ghetto before being forced to do so to live with his niece and her young son, Adam. But when Adam's body is found tangled in the barbed wire of the ghetto, murdered and with one of his legs removed, Erik begins to search for his murderer. Finding Adam is not the only victim, his search gains momentum - but all this is set against the background of a community struggling to survive under the repressive Nazi regime. What does it matter that a few children are being killed when over 100 people a day are dying of starvation and disease? Erik continues his search, although the reader is aware from the be... moreginning of the book that all does not go well for Erik as, in the prologue, he has returned to the ghetto as a ghost, where he tells his story to the one resident who can see him. Great characters occupying a brutal and deadly setting - 8/10.
review 2: I enjoyed this historical thriller set in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II. The central mystery, involving the murder and mutilation of Jewish children in the Warsaw ghetto, is set against the larger injustices of the Holocaust as a whole, making for a read which is both intriguing and heartbreaking. There is a poignancy to this story and its characters which transcends the genre of suspense. Very well-done. less
