My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: King University
Location: Bristol TN
In previous posts I have mentioned the origins of a number colleges tied to a Presbytery. King University in Bristol TN falls into that category. King University began when the leaders of the Holston Presbytery in Northeast Tennessee in 1866 wanted to establish a classical school.
The Reverend James King, a prominent landowner and Senior minister of the denomination in Northeastern Tennessee, came forward with a gift of land for a campus near the town of Bristol. The school began in 1867. The Presbytery in appreciation of the gift, voted to name the new institution King College in his honor. The school kept that name until 2013 when it became King University.
King University, located in Bristol, Tennessee, is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The 135-acre hilltop campus is two miles from the center of Bristol, a city of 45,000 residents. Today it has an enrollment of over 2,000 students.
One notable former student of King College was the author Patricia Cornwell who began college at King but transferred to Davidson where she graduated in 1979. After college she began working at the Charlotte Observer.
