review 1: A painful examination of a psychiatrist slipping into darker and darker realms, and taking his patients and wife down with him. Ducornet is (as always) unflinching in her fascination for "the monstrous and the marvelous." Here is a man who persuades himself that seducing his patients is an essential part of their treatment, who is almost self-conscious in the "clues" he leaves for his wife. He is as vulgar as he is intelligent, a sex addict and a narcissist. For anyone who wants to read it for mere titillation, please look elsewhere: this is a psychological portrait, not eroticism.
review 2: For a book that's heavily about sex and such, there wasn't enough actual fucking in this book. I wanted more. Strange main character and don't get me wrong, I use to cut th
... moree shit out of myself, I like cutters; I like trannies. I like people in power who abuse that power to take advantage of those under their power. But this book didn't quite hit for me even while Ducornet has some great lines, "In the world I know, everyone is betrayed sooner or later," or "My clients are thwarted, famished, and lonely," or "I never forget that I am dealing with people with people who, despite their determinisms, their needful tenderness, their pride, can at any time kill me or call their lawyers." Great lines, and I didn't have a problem with the self-centered, horrifically egotistical nature of the main character; I myself am self-centered and horrifically egotistical. I think it was just the lack of actual sex. For such a graphic book, it lacked the right type of graphic nature. Also, I hate it when authors refer to genitals as "their sex." less

This book would put me off ever consulting a therapist. Lousy, unbelievable, trash.

Frighteningly misogynistic, but very well-written nonetheless.
