review 1: When Emily Keane loses her promotion and her boyfriend on the same day, her spirits plummet so deeply that she wants to kill herself. She’d been anticipating the promotion and her boyfriend Lenny’s proposal for a long time. In fact, she had planned a great life for herself. Now, Emily is planning to leave her organs to science. But an invitation to a charity event by her gay hair stylist, Tyler, and an introduction to a surgeon changes everything. The surgeon offers Emily a million dollars to let him harvest her organs in a year’s time. Emily’s state of mind is so low that she accepts, figuring she’d use the money to step out of her comfort zone and try something new for once. And try she does, with disastrous results.Carpe DiEmily is labelled a romantic comedy a... moredventure, however adventure takes front and center in this story. While events had me smiling, there was only one laugh-out-loud moment. The pacing is good and the narrative descriptions aren’t overdone. Emily’s anguish and need for a well-ordered life are portrayed well. With the exception of Tyler, though, most of the other characters are two dimensional or too predictable. It’s important to note that this book is only the first part of Emily’s story. In other words, there are no endings. The book stops at a cliff hanger as she’s about to face eviction, which is Emily’s last hope of stability. Some readers will balk at the idea of purchasing a second book to find out what happens next. I’m still undecided.
review 2: Riley J Ford’s purpose for writing her book Carpe DiEmily was to let her audience know that everyone has a purpose in their lives and not to give up everything so easily. Carpe DiEmily lets the audience know that someone or something is always there for another person to give them and their life some purpose. Everyone has something to live for, big or small. This book can be a day brightener for those who read it. It gives a sense of hope for the people who don’t have any. Carpe DiEmily is sure to have a lasting effect on everyone who reads it.Carpe DiEmily was exceptionally written. Once you started reading, you definitely could not stop so it was obviously a cliffhanger. Each chapter held a surprise that you had to continue reading to find out what that surprise was. For example, after Emily and her longtime boyfriend Lenny had separated, she decided to commit suicide because she felt like she had no other reason to be alive. When Emily describes herself as “a worthless waste of space, anyway. No one would miss her. Why not give her life some meaning? Why not save someone else?”, Ford’s goal was to make her audience continue to read to see what Emily was going to do next (Ford 86) . The author had a way of foreshadowing many of the points in the story. This made the story come together smoothly which made it a wonderful book to read.Carpe DiEmily was extremely captivating. Many, many people in the world experience the feelings Emily felt, empty and alone. While reading this book, much of the audience will laugh throughout. Although this book was comical, it had its serious moments. Carpe DiEmily was very relatable. While reading the book, the audience could tie in their own real life situations and connect with it. For example, every girl plans to get married when they get older. Emily was ecstatic when “wondered what would be the best outfit for a wedding proposal. Her wedding proposal, to be exact” (Ford 6). The greatest strength of Carpe DiEmily was the fact that it was absolutely relatable. The plot of this story was something that could one hundred percent happen and real life… and does. Everything that Emily encountered was something every day people actually really go through. Recently, suicide is very common and reading this book immediately made me think of one of my close friends. Another strength was the fact that every chapter was about the same length. The greatest weakness of Carpe DiEmily was the fact that it ended. It was an amazing story. I would recommend this book to all of my friends and family. This book was very entertaining, and was definitely worth the read. Carpe DiEmily can help with real life situations and potentially mend relationships. This book can also potentially give meaning to another person’s life going through the same things as Emily. Carpe DiEmily is a part of a series, so based on this book I would recommend the others. I think the other books will have a lasting effect just like Carpe DiEmily. less
