review 1: This is not really a cookbook, but I bought it because I wanted to get at the vegan oil-free and dairy-free recipes that come with this. I like what he has to offer. He's not a chef, but he's got basic recipes that work and are oil-free. He's also gotten input from a whole bunch of people on recipes. Plus, there aren't a whole lot of crazy paycheck-busting ingredients and I really like that. I bought the Kindle version and it's a big awkward when the book tells you to go to a page and you can't do that. There should be embedded links. But now that I've read through this, I like the recipes enough that I'll buy it. I particularly like the hummus recipes without oil and tahini. Cool!
review 2: This book is an excellent introduction to a healthy nutrition plan tha
... moret is vegan. I really enjoyed the stories, like how Rip competed in a triathlon where he lost seven toenails, and how his bear-ball-eating grandfather had a stroke and fell over onto the cat. I found Rip's advice to be practical and motivating. Rip made the diet approachable and made it feel easy. I felt as if the whole diet was geared toward people who had never tried veganism before and wanted to see if it would work for them. I wish the Logan library had had it when I was investigating veganism and deciding if it was going to be right for me. But now the advice seems simplistic. I know how to go to Subway and order a sandwich with extra veggies and no meat or cheese or mayo. But I understand that a beginner may feel bewildered about where and what to eat, so I'm not holding it against Rip for starting at the beginning. Some of the recipes call for sugar -- a plus for people who aren't ready to give up sugar completely, but not useful for me. I would recommend this book for people who want to dip a toe into the vegan life but who are apprehensive that they will have to give up all their favorite foods and don't know what to eat. This is very useful for a person at that stage in their nutrition plan. For an experienced vegan it may provide some extra support for sticking to the diet, but it won't have much new information. I did learn some sources of vitamin B12 that I hadn't thought of before, and that was worth the whole thing. less

Good stuff. I then viewed Forks over Knives. Another good book on the subject.

Great book to help persuade the man in your life to follow a plant based diet.

Informative and persuasive, without being too preachy.
