review 1: Sorry to say I didn't finish it. I was enjoying it, although rather slowly paced, and about halfway through I just lost interest. Maybe it's the whole fate thing, where people follow along their pre-destined path. It's kinda boring. Like, look! He has this great purpose, and watch him fulfill it! There's no suspense, no mystery. Sure, Bonaventure will help reveal a secret. Somehow I just didn't care enough to find out what that secret was.
review 2: I give this a strong 4.5 rating and I'm struggling with if I should go with 5... This is a unique story with interesting characters and plot lines. I usually love fiction set in the South, especially when it includes the many cultures in and around New Orleans. (I'm a HUGE fan of "American Horror Story-Coven"!)
... more This was a satisfying read - very spiritual and beautifully written but it's a story I may need to think about for a while...Throughout my reading of this, I kept thinking what an incredible movie it would make. In my mind, I especially saw Whoopie Goldberg as Trinidad and could think of other current actors doing the parts of all the other characters, too - Dancy, Letice, William, Adelaide, Bonaventure... This is something I never do with books (I prefer books over movies) but these thoughts kept pushing thru. Some scenes reminded me of "Ghost"..."The Silence of Bonaventure" is a story of love, loss, guilt, and finally, redemption set in a mystical area of the 1950s South. I especially loved the Cajun and Creole characters with the descriptions of "voodoo", "hoodoo" and the beliefs in "Mother Earth", Knowing and Purpose juxtaposed with the Christian religious beliefs of Catholics and Evangelicals. I'm not a fan of any mainstream, organized religion but I am very firm in my belief of "God" and certainly of a Higher Power - I appreciated that the author gave all these elements to this story and did it in a beautiful, accepting way.As for Bonaventure and his "gift" ... that is something I'm still trying to reconcile and imagine and I'm sure I'll be thinking about this a lot in days to come. I know this story has inspired me to sit quietly and listen more closely ... that is something most of us never think to do. less
