The Boyfriend Chronicles
review 1: It was really really good. Sort of an old set up, guy pretends to be someone's boyfriend and then actually falls/becomes involved. But the key difference is that the guy is a straight man and the someone is a gay man. I was sort of worried going into the book. Would it be believable? Would the characters be "real" or caricatures? too smutty? There are intense sex sessions, but nothing I found offensive. But that is an opinion. Others should not start the book without knowing what they are in for. The writing and story line were great. If you are looking for a romance with a little twist, I recommend this book. Also, in a perfect world, this should not matter, but we do not live in a perfect world, so, I am a heterosexual female and I enjoyed this book. Love is love, so do... more not dismiss this book just because its key couple is two men.
review 2: This is presented as a gay-for-you story with Dylan being super straight. It turns out he was in love with a guy before and wanted to get physical but the guy was terminally ill. So maybe he was not so gay-for-you with Alec. It's got humor that is strictly based on the fumblings of the gay MC Alec who does not want to get involved because he isn't over his ex yet. It is presented that Dylan learned people he loves always leave him primary based on the bestie who died. It is presented that Alec feels people leave primarily on being abandoned by his mother and being dumped by his ex.Come on get real. These guys are in love but they cannot deal with it because life gave them a bum deal. Friends and family members die but somehow people grieve and move on even with the loss. There is no reason that Dylan should have a deep rooted psychological problem with commitment. These are mature people. Alec is a doctor. If anyone knows people die it is Alec because he works with seriously ill homeless and terminally ill patients. In life boyfriends take off without giving reasons. Alec is no different than millions of other people whose relationships have abruptly ended. There is no reason that Alec should have a deep rooted psychological problem with commitment. The whole story is about overcoming these commitment phobias which is a thin plot line. It is suppose to be funny. The joke is Alec is a bumbling idiot mechanically and Dylan is a mechanic. A frail excuse for comedy. It did not work quite so well because it's hard to feel anything for Dylan. He spent 3 teen years homeless. Either that experience taught him to say as little as possible or it is just his personality. It is hard for me to get close to a main character who won't say what is on their mind and in Dylan's case hardly speaks at all except about motorcycles. Alec says too much but he doesn't say the whole truth of what is thinking about Dylan.Miscommunication is such a trite tired plot device that it just makes the mature reader frustrated. Commitment phobias that have no basis in real life just makes the mature reader consider the MCs infantile.Nevertheless I got through the story with no desire to give up reading which is more than I can say for the sequel which was a total soap opera fantasy. less
