review 1: Topically not my favorite type of story, but Wilson's writing still shines. A couple of instances: "...the kind of riddle that cuts close to the tear ducts in its nonsense..." (p. 154); And on p. 164: "For one fragile moment–a fraction of time as motionless as a bug in amber..." The narrator is presented as a master of understatement, often conveying a meaning with just the opposite sentiments. One of Wilson's enduring themes, Darwinian evolution, is prominent once again in this novel.
review 2: OK, it has been 6 months so I'd like to think that the trauma of this experience has worn off a little. I've been known to be a little harsh on some first time authors, particularly if they mistake my brain for the shredder that they were obviously aiming for. But wh
... moreat is this guy's excuse? He does this for a living. The writing starts out as some lewdness between a man, a dictionary, and a thesaurus, and then quickly deteriorates into some bizarre language parody of a cross between civil war letters and old Boy's Life Magazine articles from the 1950s. Throw in a first person perspective from an idiot and an impossible time line for good measure.Imagine, if you will, an America approximately 150 years hence that has somehow managed to cram in several eras and upheavals (ages of man, if you will) and somehow endured many years of an agrarian society based on aristocracy and indentured servitude roughly analogous to the mid nineteenth century. Now imagine that the supreme court has been replaced as the third part of the government by theocrats that appear to be descendants of the Westboro Baptist Church. If only there was some sort of payoff. I thought that it might be the narrator, but after a while, I realize that he was trapped with me and he was trying to make sense of it as best he could. In the end, it was just a cruel hoax perpetrated by reviewers who must spend the rest of their time sabotaging the voting for reality show talent competitions. less
