The Long Weekend 2 (Pages 59 – 90)

SPOILERS!!!

In the next chapters Claire reminisces when she first met Nick and his family. It was when she was seventeen and going to college for her A-levels. As she waited for the train, she saw three boys ducking the level crossing and crossing the platform. When they came closer, Claire told them off, and for some reason her directness must have impressed them because when the train arrived, they asked her to sit with them. The three boys were Nick Barnes and his brothers Felix and Shrimp. The boys invited her to a party they were throwing that weekend, but Claire thought that they weren’t serious. So the following Saturday she had to work in the pub as usual, and then at the end of the night Nick appeared, bringing her clothes that she can change into so that she could join his party. That night was magical for Claire, and she and Nick became an item.

From then on Claire became part of the family. Nick’s brothers treated her like a sister; his father wanted her to work for him as a director in his wine company, and his mother welcomed her like a daughter, going shopping with her. Everything was perfect and Claire could imagine getting married to Nick. Then things changed when Isobel, Nick’s mother, is diagnosed cancer again, and then she tells Claire but asks her to keep her the secret. Maybe that is the terrible thing she did, not speaking up when she should about Isobel’s disease, and maybe if she had told Nick, Isobel would have received treatment. That might be the reason why they are not together nowadays. I have to say that if that is the case, Claire is too hard on herself. She was just a teenager, so she can’t be accounted responsible for what happened to Isobel.
