review 1: "We respond with immediacy to desperate circumstances but often are unable to shift from crisis relief to the more complex work of long-term development...When relief does not transition to development in a timely way, compassion becomes toxic.""A hunger-free zone may be possible, but developing the dependency-free zone is the real challenge.'The best section in this book for me was "Good Neighbors" to the end of the book, where Christians are encouraged to live *with* those they are trying to help. Until we live alongside them, we will never really understand how to best help them. We will also never see the good they are already cultivating on their own. "Our strategies for helping are driven by combating problems rather than strengthening potential."This book is encoura... moreging and definitely points in the right direction, but it's a concept an entire church will need to embrace before it can be effective. So I will start pushing this book on folks from church. :) PLEASE READ IT!!!
review 2: I think Lupton takes his claims and stretches them much further than he ought. He takes a situation and plucks out a nuance. But then applies it to all mission work. For someone as aware of the radical diversity among types of mission work as he is, he really should not universalize his lessons so quickly. At the end of the day, he's a man who extends his assertions too far. But he is also raising critical questions that few others are raising. And for that I find value in this text. I thought the chapter on Mission Tourism in Root and Dean's, "The Theological Turn in Youth Ministry" gives a much more level headed, if more limited in scope, analysis of the same issue. less
