review 1: This book is ... I read 200 pages and I just could not continue reading. I'm normally a generous reader- even if the book sucks I try to finish the book. But with this book..... There are just too many things I don't like. First of all, the writing style. It read to me very amateurish. I don't mean for young adults because I read books like Phantom Tollbooth (which was a terrific read) and it is considered kids book. I mean that the writer does not have the capacity to write captivating stories with engaging characters and conflict. All of the characters felt flat and dull. I extremely disliked the main character Tracy and Dan. Their relationship felt forced and unrealistic. In terms of conflict/plot, I felt cheated from what I've expected the main driving point would be. ... moreIn the beginning the writer tricks the reader in thinking that Tracy will spend more time trying to find the real killer. But no. We spend more time with Edmund House and trying to free him. Like who seriously cares about this guy? I mean he is totally unsympathetic character who should probably rot in jail. More tactful way of writing this story would be if Tracy was proactively searching for the killer (and I mean not by flashbacks- there are instances where we learn that Tracy tried to find more evidence in the past). Lincoln Lawyer sort of had the same thing where the main character realized that the man in jail was wrongly convicted. But- did he spend time with the person in jail? No. Most of the book was Mick Haller trying to bust the real killer's ass. Come-on! That's a real crime novel. And you know what's worse then terrible set-up? Tracy's motive in helping Edmund. She says that the trial will help re-open the investigation into Sarah's death. Sooooo passive!! But even if the trial begins wouldn't the same cops head the investigation? Why does she think that they would find anything remotely different from what they found (or rigged) in the previous investigation? Only thing they have or at least the writer told the reader is that they've found Sarah's body WHICH SHE CREMATED? Not to mention Tracy has no jurisdiction in her hometown- she's a detective in SEATTLE. So I assume that somehow the murder in Seattle will be linked to her hometown and her sister's murder blah blah blah - but seriously I've read half way through the book and nothing has happened so far. Literally nothing! There is no sense of excitement, fear, and the stakes are low.
review 2: Robert Dugoni succeeds in writing a gripping mystery and interesting characters that will keep you invested until the very last page. He explores a sister's struggle to find out the truth about what really happened the night her sister disappeared. I highly recommend this story for the interesting twist and great character development that leaves you thinking about the final pages into the wee hours of the morning. less
