review 1: The words flow as they do from Conroy and Irving, this book I chose because of Garth Stein's reference to it in the Q&A following A Sudden Light. The reference had to do with the narrative voice alone -- Stein choosing the same approach -- but one writer doesn't nod to another on device alone, I believe. It's gorgeous, this book by Goolrick. The reader knows up-front it'll be a tragedy of some kind but it's such a beautiful journey. I did shed a tear or two on finishing it, something that hasn't happened in a while, but it wasn't because of the tragedy itself. Good writers tap into difficult truths in eloquent (or sometimes not) ways, and an almost universal one is that we all witnessed something ugly or horrific as children, something that played a role in who we became.... more It's how we remember those things that's the point, both in life and in the narrative of this damn fine book.
review 2: I would actually give this book 3 1/2 stars. I read it all in one day, but I found myself skimming over a couple parts. I really don't think this book was meant to be a fast read. I'm sure if I would have taken more days to read this, I may have enjoyed it more. I still would reccomend this book to readers who do not mind a disturbing/somewhat depressing read. Which, for some reason, I can't get enough of :) less

The writing had moments of pure, eloquent prose. The story itself was unsettling.

A little sad but suspenseful and very well written.

A country ballad of a book. So sad but so lyrical.
