review 1: This book relates the middle period of the career of Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman consul who was a contemporary of Julius Caesar. This is undoubtedly a very well researched and written book, and while reading it you feel immersed in the world of Cicero's Rome, but it still wasn't my cup of tea. You can't help but compare this trilogy with Conn Iggulden's Emperor series, which I found much more enjoyable because of its inclusion of graphic descriptions of the numerous battles in which Caesar was involved. Harris' book concentrates much more on the political intrigues and manoeuvring of the various politicians and suffers because of it. I found the book hard work because of the over-emphasis on the political situations, and also keeping track of the many characters feature... mored in the novel. Nevertheless, I did ultimately enjoy the novel and at its conclusion I was curious enough to find out what happened to Cicero through Wikipedia, but probably not curious enough to read the next volume.
review 2: A good thriller, a tad overstuffed with minor characters, somewhat convoluted, but it definitely carries you along. There is less to like about Cicero in this volume, but this is not a book about liking the characters. It's more like the Netflix show "House of Cards" where you marvel at what venal bastards they all are.Kind of depressing to have it brought home to you that politics has never been a clean or honorable profession, not now, not 2000 years ago. less

Not as good as his more modern historical thrillers and the ending was weak
