review 1: Where to start...I love worshipping the Lord in hymns. I was so blessed to read the stories behind my beloved hymns, and read of some I've never heard before. Since I could go on all day, I will focus on the 3 that gripped me the most, starting with my all time favorite hymn...Take my life an let it be consecrated Lord to thee! I write this not as a song title, but as an anthem. My heart cries with a passion similar to Ms. Havergal - God have it all! I'm so glad to read her story behind this song. Until this book, I don't think I stored to memory the song writer's name - and this my favorite hymn! One other piece of information that I gleamed from this book was that she was a pen pal to my favorite song writer, Fanny Crosby. And as Morgan wrote, Crosby is the American c... moreounterpart to the English HavergalSecondly, I was astounded by the named locations for I Surrender All writer, Van de Venter. This guy was born in the same state as my Grandma Shilling, lived in the same area of PA as my grandpa. Get this! I wrote the song in the town where my grandparents died. Consequently, this song is in my top 5. If not before, it certainly is now!Lastly, a WOMAN wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic, one of the greatest patriotic songs EVER! Enough said...
review 2: I've never really taken an interest in contemporary Christian music. I'm old school. Brought up in an old fashioned Baptist church, I'd much rather hear the sweet sounds of a church congregation raising their voices together to sing a timeless hymn like "The Old Rugged Cross" than to hear anything the modern music world can offer. Not that I don't appreciate Francesca Battistelli or Jars of Clay, it's just that classic hymns remind me of my home church... where I was saved, where I was baptized, where my Mom taught Sunday School and where I considered the Pastor and his family to be members of my own family. So for me, this book was like going home. Needless to say, I liked it very much.Robert J. Morgan wrote a book on a topic that I didn't even know I wanted to read about until I was on day three of not wanting to put "Then Sings My Soul Special Edition" down. Mr. Morgan has gathered 150 of the most loved hymns into these 300 pages and has given us not only the lyrics and music, but also their not often known back story, including who authored each song and what inspired them. He includes age old favorites like "Amazing Grace", "He Lives" and "Just as I Am" as well as songs I guess I never really considered to be "hymns" {which, I learned, is simply defined as "any song of praise or thanksgiving to God" so I guess they really would be} "What Child is This" and even "Battle Hymn of the Republic".What beloved children's hymn was written by the only two civilians buried in the military cemetery at West Point? What Christmas carol was inspired by the fact that the organ in Father Joseph Mohr's Austrian church was broken? {answers below!} If you can appreciate those kind of fun, yet obscure, facts, you will love this book. Even the book itself demands a bit of quiet reverence. Sturdier than your average soft back, the cover is simple and beautiful and between the jagged edges and the ivory color of the pages, you almost feel as though you are holding a hymnal.I recommend this book to both old and young. To teachers and preachers and students and choir directors. It is both a wonderful and educational read.{The answers are "Jesus Loves Me" and "Silent Night".}Disclosure :: I received a complimentary copy of "Then Sings My Soul Special Edition" from the publisher through the BookSneeze®com book review bloggers program. It is soothing - healing, to sing or hum the hymns, and read the facing page history.
