review 1: What a wealth of information. This is a must-read for those interested in history, presidents, America, politics, or just increasing their knowledge in general. We are taken into the inner circle of FDR as he leaves life and then into Truman's hesitancy as he is promptly dropped into the seat of the most powerful man in America during a time of war. The weekend of April 13-15, 1945 is so eventful that it takes a full book to explain it all.Besides being very informative, Mr. Klara does a fantastic job of keeping the pages turning. This is not a textbook; it is not dry or boring in the least. It is almost like a novel the way it flows and tells the story of a weekend that changes history. Not often reading non-fiction, this reader is beyond impressed!
review 2: Th
... moreis book used an interesting lens to examine the death of a president, the beginnings of another presidency, the development of the first weapon of mass destruction, and the continuation of a war--the funeral train voyage of President Franklin D. Roosevelt from the site if his death in Warm Springs, Georgia to his final resting place in Hyde Park, New York. Author Robert Klara bring together a plethora of topics including the sadness and betrayal of the First Lady, the inexperience of President Truman, the secrecy surrounding the atomic bomb, the politics that is ever-present in Washington, the impending end of World War II and beginnings of the Cold War, and an incredible knowledge of trains. Klara packs a great deal into this tiny volume. Common Core Standards: Analyze how individuals, ideas, and events affect complex events and sequences in informational text. less
