review 1: Written in the same vein as True Grit, this story is told in a straight-forward no frills manner. Thomas Walker and his father are on the road to sell Samuel Colt's revolving cartridge handgun. They don't get far before Thomas's father is murdered and the colts are stolen. The tale then becomes one of revenge. It is a good story all the way through, though it does get a tad strange in the middle. It ends a bit too abruptly as well. I would have preferred a longer story with more details about Thomas's growth into manhood. Nonetheless, it is a welcome entry into the field of Western literature.
review 2: Although a classic story of revenge in the Wild West this is beautifully written, and by an Englishman. It is the story of a 12 year old boy who is orpha
... morened and reluctantly taken on by an ageing cowboy, a real hero and role model. There is humour, and parts are haunting, especially the unwise visit to the hut in the woods. I read this while cycling down the Great Divide in Montana and Wyoming, along the route the Pony Express took, so I had plenty of atmosphere. Lautner succeeds in providing a little bit of everything for the reader; humour, coming of age, a fantastic backdrop, and some real tension. Some scenes are unforgettable. As an example, the old man Strother Gore's hug in the woods and the young lads experiences there. This is a wonderful book and highly recommended. Although it is a very American novel, Lautner is quite British, and as a first novel it is particularly impressive. less
