review 1: I did not find the premise of this book particularly interesting so it's saying something that I read the whole thing. McCammon clearly knows his way around a story. The portrayal of the music business at the gigging band level was meticulously realistic and probably the best executed thing in the book. However the supernatural angle didn't really come together. The story of the mining town disaster was promising but in the end good vs. evil on the epic stage with characters as pawns is kind of played out. It became hard to believe once multiple people were possessed with the urge to kill the band. It showed in the thinness of some of the characters, particularly Ariel who was such an archetype that when she was the victim of terrible violence she lied about the extent of ... moreit, went on with the show and it was never mentioned again. That is not a strong character but weak writing. And while I appreciate the end not wrapping up too tightly the end really didn't deliver.
review 2: Having difficulty reading stories that have any kind of focus on the evil side of human nature -- there's just too much of that in the real world (seriously, how can a TV show like "Dexter" be popular in any kind of sane world?), don't need to be reminded of it in my preferred entertainment. One can read McCammon either as an action story about the battle between good and evil or a story about interesting people, and I usually do both when I read this author. Fast enough read that the length is not an obstacle. less
